- REQUIREMENTS
- ------------
-
- An 80x86 processor with 512Kb of memory and a VGA display is required for
- the game to run. A hard drive and a mouse are both recommended, but neither
- is required. This game is Microsoft Mouse compatible for drivers 7.00 and
- later.
-
- The processor speed only affects the visual effects and speed of the deal.
- The flashing bars and dealing will be relatively slow on an 8086 machine
- and relatively fast on 386DX/33 and faster machines. Although this only
- effects the special effects and should not hinder your ability to play the
- game, you may wish to slow the processor speed to achieve the desired speed
- of the flashing menu bars, the dealing, and the introductory screen.

- INTRODUCTION
- ------------
-
- CLUB PINOCHLE is a computerized version of the classic card game of Pinochle.
- The four-player version is implemented here, played as two teams. The
- standard rules and scoring schedule are used, with some tournament rules also
- implemented. The game can be customized to play the way you wish. The
- options screen lists many popular options which can be toggled to match
- the dialect which you are most familiar.
-
-
-
- NAVIGATING THROUGH THE GAME
- ---------------------------
-
- You will be welcomed with a general menu. ABOUT GAME tells you about the
- copyright information. START GAME begins the game. OPTIONS lets you
- select how you wish to play Pinochle. RULES gives you an on-line list of
- the rules of Pinochle. CONTROLS shows you the controls to use to move the
- selected item. And, of course, QUIT exits the program.
-
- Any time during the game, pressing S will toggle the sound on and off, and
- pressing V will toggle the cheat mode, allowing you to view everyone's
- cards. During the deal, toggling V will not take effect until all cards
- have been dealt. Pressing S and V during a PRESS ANY KEY prompt also will
- have no effect on the sound or cheat mode. Pressing ESC will escape to
- the opening menu. If you wish to continue the game, select START GAME
- and you will be prompted if you wish to start a new game or finish the
- current one. You will then either start a new game or return to the
- place in the hand where you aborted.
-
- All options can be accessed with either the numeric pad keys or the arrow
- keys (on an 101-key enhanced keyboard). To make a selection, press ENTER.
- BE SURE THAT NUM LOCK IS ON before attempting to use the numeric pad keys.
- If you are using the arrow keys instead, then this will have no effect on
- you movements. Otherwise, your movements will be limited.
-
- All menu items can also be accessed with a Microsoft-compatible mouse.
- Simply position the mouse over the desired option and press the LEFT
- mouse button. Double clicking is not necessary due to the confirmation
- inquiry presented after each selection.
-
- When selecting the options, clicking on the option or moving the cursor to
- the option and pressing ENTER will select (or toggle) that particular
- option. When you are finished, you can simply exit, or you can save these
- options. If you save the options, they will take the place of the defaults
- and will be active every time the game is loaded, until new options are
- saved. If you do not save, these options will only be active as long as
- the game is running. If you quit, the previous options will remain intact.
-
- When you begin the game, you are prompted for your name. Enter it by using
- the keyboard. A maximum of 12 characters can be entered. If you make an
- error, use the BACKSPACE key to make corrections, NOT the arrow keys.
-
- When computing the number of points needed to fulfill the contract, a yellow
- number indicates the number of points needed, and an orange number indicates
- the number of points exceeding the bid. As long as a team fails to take a
- trick, a small indicator will appear at the lower right of their score.
- This is a warning to a team that they need to win a trick to avoid any
- penalties.
-
- When scoring occurs, the defense's score is calculated after EACH TRICK.
- However, the offense's score is determined after the HAND is over. A YELLOW
- score is positive, whereas an ORANGE score is negative. If the score is less
- than or equal to -1,000, the negative sign will not be displayed due to a
- limited space.
-
- After the game is completed, the scorecard is saved onto disk in an ASCII
- format as SCORE.OUT. When you quit the game, you can view the scorecard
- from the DOS prompt by typing TYPE SCORE.OUT, or you can print the file on
- any printer.
-
